St. Louis, MO – November 23, 2022 –
Everyone matters and deserves to have their story told on screen in a memorable way that does real justice to their unique story. That fundamental notion is what drives my passion for what we do at STORYSMART.
I am so passionate about that because I lost my father at an early age. I was five when my dad died and now more than fifty years later, I am still haunted by not really knowing him and feeling like I missed out on what so many others have or have had.
Candidly I was hopeful STORYSMART would be further along in developing our legacy video work for individuals and families. While we have done some great work, we are not where I want us to be yet.
I have this vision that someday you will hire us to tell your grandmother’s personal story and it will come to life like a Ken Burn’s documentary with Morgan Freeman doing the voiceover. I know, I’m a dreamer. I’m also a pragmatic realist who sees what is possible.
I believe with talented storytellers, machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep fake technology, and appropriate license agreements it is possible to bring that vision to fruition. With the help of robots, our STORYSMART humans will be able to deliver something that never before in human history has been possible - an affordable high-quality video story that connects at a deeply human level with those we love the most.
Today we can produce that video using award winning journalists. We can do it without all the technology. But without the help of robots, it is more time consuming and expensive than I’d like it to be in order to make it accessible to all.
That said, affordability is in the eyes of the beholder. Most of our pricing is a fraction of what others charge. We can help tell your story for a lot less than most production companies because of our unique journalism infused production model built around a single storyteller.
Today, we are proving our video storytelling mettle by helping clients tell an honest story in an affordable high-quality way using some of the best journalists in television and film today. That said, most of our work is laser focused on helping our business clients. We see that as the way to scale STORYSMART nationally.
As the founder of bootstrap startup, I’ve learned that dreams are great, but the viability traction rubber hits the road on what you can sell over and over again.
As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with our loved ones, I’m grateful for a lot of things personally and professionally.
We have our health and will be able to host Thanksgiving with our family. Like many families we will share great food, fellowship and more than a few stories. It is as it should be.
So this blog post is to ask you the question of when is it the right time to share your story?
I’m a firm believer that there is no time like the present. As a friend said in an email to me recently about sharing your story, if not now, when.
His message, which I’ll echo, is do it now. Don’t wait to tell your story.
And I’m not talking about hiring us to help you tell your story on screen.
Although we would love the opportunity to help you tell your story, you don’t need us to do it. You have so many options when it comes to telling your story on screen. Technology has made video production accessible to all. That cell phone in your pocket (or the one you are reading this blog on) can do a pretty good job.
My point is that you don’t need to hire out. You can do it yourself, with possibly the help of other family members. Or you could hire one of hundreds of video production companies that specialize in legacy videos.
If you decide to go the DIY route and do it yourself, be sure to check the StoryCatcher app
or the Record Me Now app. You can also get free resources and advice from Story Corps.
If you decide you want to hire a professional to help preserve your story, you have numerous options. You need to decide what you want it to look like in the end. Do you want a Ken Burns style documentary or simply capturing the actual story on camera.
Your least expensive option is to simply capture the story on camera.
Earlier this week I met with Vance Crow (vancerowe.com), a local podcaster and public speaker who has launched a legacy video business built around a video podcast model. He interviews an individual or a couple on camera in his studio. It is shot with three 4K cameras and it looks like a blend of a TV talk show meets podcast.
I love his model because the client gets a beautifully shot simple on camera interview that is confidential and high-quality. Prices range from $1500 to $4000. You can learn more and book an interview with him at https://legacyinterviews.com/
If you are looking for something similar but virtual, check out tellmystories.org. They sell recorded zoom call interviews with pictures for prices ranging from $200 to just under $2000.
If you are looking for a higher-end production more like a documentary film, you could go to one of hundreds of legacy video providers scattered around the country. In St. Louis, my friend John Knicely is able to do a high-end documentary with his company Vita Lux. I’m not sure what his exact price points are, but I would expect it to start at $10,000 to $20,000 range for a short video.
Our STORYSMART professional storytelling work starts at $6,500 and goes up from there. What sets our approach apart from most is we use a one person or two-person approach to storytelling. We work with award winning TV reporters and journalist filmmakers. Everything we do is built around an interview model and a proprietary pre-production process designed to help you get the exact story you want.
We believe in transparency and cost-certainty with our work. We also are committed to conveying copyright with our work. That is unique in our space. You will own the copyright on whatever we do for you. We believe you should insist on that with whoever you hire, especially for something as personal as a legacy video.
If you are interested in learning more about how STORYSMART can help you, it is free and confidential to talk to us. If we can help you preserve your legacy and share your story, please let me know. In the meantime, have a Happy Thanksgiving.
