What is The STORYSMART® Way?
What is The STORYSMART® Way?
The STORYSMART® Way is the name of our email newsletter that debuts October 2025. It is also how I describe our values and unique approach to professional storytelling.
At its heart, STORYSMART® is about democratizing access to the finest professional storytelling available today. For too long, storytelling has been controlled by gatekeepers. Too often, creators and the people whose lives are at the center of those stories are cut out of the value they help create. That isn't right.
The STORYSMART® Way is Different
Our mission is simple to say but bold in scope: democratize access to high-quality professional storytelling.
Why? Because everyone matters.
More media is being created by the masses today than by mass media. That’s an incredible shift. But the democratization hasn’t gone far enough. The tools are there, but the know-how, the craft, and the access to elite storytellers are still concentrated at the top.
While the masses create more media, it isn’t better media. Some of it is, but much isn’t. I started STORYSMART® to change that.
Why This Matters to Me
If you’ve read my book, you know my personal “why.” After my dad died young, I escaped into stories. TV and movies became my refuge. When I saw Star Wars for the first time, it changed everything for me. From that moment, I was hooked on cinematic storytelling. That bias still shapes me today. I love stories told on screen by a group of talented creatives. It is a transcendent art form that influences culture globally.
I don’t believe there is anything more powerful than a well told story on screen.
We don’t just want stories told. We want them told well. And we don’t want storytelling power locked up behind Hollywood gates.
We want you to have access to that for your true story.
My Tilt
Joe Pulizzi — the founder of Content Marketing Institute — talks about a “Tilt” as the unique angle or point of view that sets your content apart.
Mine is this: everyone matters, deserves to be remembered and is entitled to take ownership of their storytelling process. I reject a binary, either or mindset. Either sell out or do it yourself. There is a better way. I want you to adopt a media mogul mindset that is centered around a collective approach to professional storytelling, built on the independent film model.
My tilt is to blend the best of media by the masses with the best of mass media. But it doesn't stop there. I have a collectivist mindset about it. We is stronger than me. Creative collaboration is the key to great storytelling.
Why can’t we have the best of both worlds?
That means rejecting binary thinking. It’s not “do it yourself” or “sell out to the highest bidder.” It’s not mass media versus media by the masses. It’s a third way: a balanced, collaborative ecosystem where everyone wins. Audiences, creators and those at the center of true stories all win with our approach. That’s the STORYSMART® Way.
Our collaborative model is:
- A win for the subject of true stories.
- A win for the creators who bring those stories to life.
- A win for audiences hungry for truth and meaning.
- And ultimately, a win for the world.
What We Stand Against
We reject the idea that gatekeepers should decide which stories are told. We are tired of a handful of people who may or may not share our values deciding what we get to see. That isn’t right.
We reject the idea that unbridled greed should dictate the terms of creative collaboration. We have no problem with capitalism, but let’s be honest, when it comes to the global storytelling industry, it isn’t working for all. There is a better way.
Every day, innovators are showing us the way. Studios like Angel Studios are showing us how the model can be improved.
We reject the false assumption that exploitation is just “how the business works.”
We can be fair and take care of everyone. We live in a capitalist system. We embrace that, but a selfish approach that exploits others isn't acceptable to us.
With our blog posts, articles, and newsletters, we will shine the light on those that are doing the right by others.
The beauty of a great Hollywood movie or beloved TV series is that it represents the craft of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of people working together through a creative collaborative process that is greater than the individual sum of its parts. That collaborative magic is what audiences feel. And every person that is part of that process deserves to share in the rewards of a hit story.
It is a tragedy is when subjects of documentaries don’t benefit in any way from the success of films about their lives. It is a tragedy when creators are chewed up and discarded by exploitative deals. Documentary filmmakers burn out from toil of trying to piece together financing from a broken system. It is a tragedy when stories that could inspire humanity are lost because no gatekeeper thought they’d sell.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We will show you a better way. The STORYSMART® Way.
What We Stand For
We believe in:
- Ethical, non-exploitative storytelling.
- Shared equity for story sources and creators alike.
- Balance between ownership and collaboration.
- Truth as the foundation of credibility and impact.
- Authenticity, honesty and humanity - not just in stories themselves, but the professional process of producing them.
- Providing access to professional-quality storytelling.
These values aren’t just aspirational. They’re practical. They’re the foundation of a sustainable model for storytelling that honors the people at the center of true stories and rewards the professionals who make those stories resonate.
Lessons from History
This isn’t a brand-new idea. The ghostwriting model has been around for centuries. A ghostwriter partners with someone to capture their memoir or biography. The subject owns the copyright, the book is written with professional quality, and both parties share in the rewards. That sort of collaboration is a win for the reader, the ghostwriter and the "author." When we are hired by a client, and they pay for the work, they own it.
If we share financing, we share ownership If we take it on as an independent film, we own it. But we don't stop there. We believe in sharing profits. With the creative team and those who lived the story.
That simple, equitable model is foundational to the STORYSMART® Way. It is proof that fairness and excellence can go hand in hand.
Hollywood, too, has glimpses of this when it works well. When the right creative team comes together, magic happens. But too often, greed skews the balance. We are here to try to help tilt the balance back.

The Future: STORYSMART® Studios
Here’s the bigger picture: we’re building a creator-owned story development film studio focused on true stories. While we haven't settled on the name yet, our working title is STORYSMART® Studios.
It will embody the STORYSMART® Way — a creator owned collective that shares intellectual property with those who are the subject of those true stories, while also rewarding the creatives who craft them.
It will be built on best practices in finance, governance, and ethical storytelling.
It will create jobs and wealth, yes — but it will also create lasting stories that matter, stories that empower, stories that preserve humanity.
This newsletter is part of that strategy. It’s the front door to a community that will make it possible.
